Psoriasis is a skin disease typically affecting 1-2 % of the population and generally described as plaque-like patches of thick and redness. It is further characterized by silver colored scales appearing on the skin. This is the most common type of psoriasis, called chronic plaque. The best psoriasis treatment for this includes topical ointments applied directly to the affected skin area.
Anne Mason, a research fellow at the Centre for Health Economics the University of York, in England gave a statement to the effect that nearly anyone who becomes afflicted with psoriasis will use topical ointment. Others may even have to resort to it for a lifetime, hence, establishing the facts about the effectiveness and safety of such treatments is important.
Ms. Mason further added that the crux of the matter is that the even if a particular ointment is considered as the best psoriasis treatment, it is only effective as far as reducing psoriasis symptoms are concerned. There is no medication available that can really cure psoriasis.
Ms. Mason statements are based on results of studies which disclosed that corticosteroids and vitamin D are effective in the cure of psoriasis when taken simultaneously with minimal short-term side effects. However, she issued a warning that the sufferer should not forego the use of vitamin D for cost considerations and merely rely on the effectiveness of corticosteroids.
A fellow researcher added that the premise of corticosteroids as the best psoriasis treatment because it is safer, is misleading. One has to take into consideration that the prolonged use of corticosteroid drugs can lead to more serious side effects.
There are numerous home treatments that are equally effective than corticosteroids, wherein we can consider any one of the following as the best psoriasis treatment:
1. To keep the skin in good condition, take a warm bath then apply creams and moisturizers.
2. Ensure daily exposure to sunlight. This is one way of achieving natural “heliotherapy” otherwise known as treatment by sunlight exposure. Just make sure that over exposure is avoided.
3. Apply moisturizing cream and let it stand on the affected skin for a little while before taking off the crusty scabs. This way, the crusts will soften to avoid irritating the psoriasis during the peeling off process.
4. In looking for the best psoriasis treatment, you can try Aloe Vera due to its natural moisturizing content. Better yet, you can experiment by trying other ointments which will best suit you. Relatively, creams that can worsen the psoriasis will be avoided.
However in using any of the home treatments mentioned, it can only be rendered as effective if the following conditions are avoided:
1. Stress coupled with anxiety. These two factors are known to trigger psoriasis or make it even worse.
2. Various body infections leading to skin irritation.
3. Intake of prescription drugs such as beta-blockers, lithium, and NSIDs. Hence, prior doctor consultation is needed.
4. Drinking of alcoholic beverages and smoking can aggravate the condition of psoriasis.
The best psoriasis treatment abound and it is only a matter of using each remedy properly in addition to changes in lifestyle to avoid any ruptures or breakouts that can further aggravate the skin disease.
